@RCN_MRC officers recognized for seeking to improve relations with Indigenous peoples

A team of five naval officers who served in Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Nanaimo has been awarded a 2018 Liz Hoffman Memorial Commendation for seeking to improve relations between the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Indigenous peoples.

The annual award, handed out by the Ombudsman for the Department of National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF), recognizes CAF members, civilian employees and family members who go the extra mile and exceed expectations in helping their colleagues resolve a difficult problem or in bringing about positive and lasting change to DND/CAF.

Sub-Lieutenant Nathan Sukhdeo, SLt Khean Murphy, Lieutenant (Navy) Jeriel Soriano, Lt(N) Justin Milley and Lieutenant-Commander Shane Denneny received the commendation “for the courage and compassion” they showed in their efforts to increase understanding and awareness between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples within the RCN.

Des officiers de la Marine honorés pour avoir cherché à améliorer les relations avec les peuples autochtones

Une équipe de cinq officiers de Marine ayant servi à bord du Navire canadien de Sa Majesté (NCSM) Nanaimo a reçu la Mention d’honneur Liz Hoffman 2018 pour avoir cherché à améliorer les relations entre la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) et les peuples autochtones.

Cette mention d’honneur est remise chaque année par l’ombudsman du ministère de la Défense nationale et des Forces armées canadiennes (MDN/FAC) et rend hommage aux membres des FAC, aux employés civils et aux membres des familles qui font des efforts supplémentaires et dépassent les attentes pour aider leurs collègues à résoudre un problème difficile ou apporter des changements positifs et durables au MDN et aux FAC.

L’enseigne de vaisseau de 1re classe Nathan Sukhdeo, l’Ens 1 Khean Murphy, le lieutenant de vaisseau Jeriel Soriano, le Ltv Justin Milley et le capitaine de corvette Shane Denneny ont reçu cette mention pour le courage et la compassion dont ils ont fait preuve en cherchant à améliorer la compréhension et la prise de conscience entre les peuples non autochtones et autochtones au sein de la MRC.
